Spiritual Gifts

Just as each of us has one body with many members,
and these members do not all have the same function,
so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each
member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts,
according to the grace given to each of us.  (Romans 12:4-6a)

God has given each Christian two vitally important gifts.  The first is the gift of faith in Jesus Christ, his work of redemption, and thus forgiveness of sings.  The second is the gift of one or more special abilities, which are to be used for the purpose of unifying the body of Christ and for the growth of God's Kingdom.  These abilities are called spiritual gifts and they are received through our baptism. Spiritual Gifts are the grace of God at work within us, empowering us to match our deep passions with the world’s deepest need.  Like other gifts or presents, it is impossible to fully appreciate and make use of our spiritual gifts until they have been opened.  The following assessment tool will help you begin to open your spiritual gifts by guiding you through a self assessment and exploring their use at First Lutheran.  This Spiritual Gifts Assessment tool is a quick survey that you can take to identify your spiritual gifts. The Spiritual Gifts Assessment is not a test, there are no right or wrong responses.

(This link will redirect you to the Spiritual Gifts Assessment from the ELCA website.  After you have completed the Assessment, you will receive a document highlighting your spiritual gifts.  Print that page and return to this page to see how your gifts can be used at First Lutheran Church and School.)

Because Spiritual Gifts are not skills or abilities we are used to hearing about, we may need help to find tangible and meaningful ways to utilize our gifts.  This discernment of how to best use our gifts happens through conversation and prayer, invite pastors and friends to join you in this conversation.  The goal is to use our gifts in service to God through a community of faith and in the world around us.  Once you have taken the Assessment and printed your results, click on the link below to see some ways you might enjoy using your Spiritual Gifts at First Lutheran Church and School.  Remember this is only the beginning of the conversation!
