Rev. Dr. Bill Hurst / Luke 12:13-21 Jesus often challenges the traditional religious thought of his day – and of our own -- especially when it comes to the serving of self as opposed to the love of neighbor and faithfulness with our blessings. In this section of Luke’s account, one of his hearers asks him to decide a financial dispute with a family member. Jesus takes this opportunity to warn against human greed and self-interest. He spins a parable of a rich landowner who forgets the long stretch of history: that none of us live solely for ourselves or for the benefits of the moment, but are called to be “rich toward God” -- in all of our choices regarding the stewardship of God’s abundant gifts.
