Music

At First Lutheran, music is an integral part of the curriculum, designed to enhance academic coursework, teach music and performance fundamentals and encourage expression of Christian faith through music.

First Lutheran School's music program teaches basic vocal and instrumental music concepts and Christian fundamentals through hymnology and liturgical settings, weekly classroom curriculum, after-school music classes and special musical performances. Christian love and caring is evident in word and melody as the children experience the joys of music in a multitude of ways throughout the year ...

Through classroom instruction. Students in kindergarten through sixth grade attend regular music classes to learn basic elements such as melody, rhythm and harmony. Recorders are introduced in third grade for note-reading and instrumental instruction. In fourth grade, all students learn to play woodwind and string instruments as part of the regular music curriculum. Students in grades five through eight can participate in the Pop Choir, a performing group which prepares special presentations for chapel, annual holiday programs and throughout other special events, or they may play an instrument as a member of the First Lutheran Ensemble.

Through worship. First Lutheran's music program nurtures Christian faith. Children in all grades at First Lutheran attend a weekly chapel service with their classes during the school day.  These services offer meaningful worship in which students hear God's word, get to know First Lutheran's pastors and sing God's praises.

Each class at First Lutheran also is responsible once every year for preparing the message for a weekly chapel through drama, recitation, dialogue and music at the direction of the teacher.
As part of our close relationship with First Lutheran Church, students also present a musical offering to the First Lutheran congregation in the church service once each year, giving the members of First Lutheran an opportunity to share in the education of the children. Students learn meaningful text, practice speaking and singing their faith and contribute their gifts to the community.

Through the fun of musical theatre. Our students in kindergarten through grade eight experience musical theatre through three separate grade-appropriate performances: a primary production (grades kindergarten and first grade), an intermediate production (grades two through four) and an upper level production (grades five through eight). Children learn solo and choral singing, dramatic presentation and choreography in these performances, which help build presentation skills and self-confidence.

In after-school musical programs. After-school and summer classes in musical performance and musical instruments are available through the FLS FirstKids program and Arts Alive. These classes are held on the First Lutheran campus and there is a charge for the instruction.

Students are also invited to experience music and share their musical talents in the youth choir groups through First Lutheran Church.  These groups meet after school on the First Lutheran School and Church campus.

Private training in vocal music is also offered after school. The students receive one-on-one instruction in breathing technique, vowel placement, articulation, expanding the vocal range and blending the registers. This instruction includes personal coaching on the student’s individual performance and preparation for auditions.
