Student Programs
First Lutheran stands apart from many public and private schools by offering an extensive program of courses and opportunities that expand student learning and educational experiences beyond the standard curriculum. Accelerated Reader (AR) Accelerated Reader (AR) is an online based reading program through Renaissance Learning (renlearn.com) that we use at First Lutheran School in grades five hrough eight. AR helps teachers manage and monitor students’ independent reading practice skills. AR’s advanced technology helps us:
Enrichment classes Regular instruction in religion, art, music, technology and physical education is incorporated into the school day at First Lutheran. Students also extend their learning beyond classroom walls on a a variety of local field trips throughout the school year. Our students in fourth through eighth grades also take a special grade-specific overnight trip each year in support of their classroom learning. The opportunities for learning and fun continue after school with interscholastic sports teams that compete against other local private schools. Students who have an interest in the arts can participate in after-school classes in fine arts, music, dance and theater offered through the First Kids program. (Fees vary by class.) Homework clinics are also available after school on campus for a fee. Our students also benefits from our close relationship with First Lutheran Church and the opportunity to participate in the church choirs and youth groups which meet after school. Leadership opportunities
Our purpose at First Lutheran is in part to prepare our students to participate in the world through lives of service and leadership. Students are given opportunities to develop leadership through the school student council, L.E.A.D., by serving as student representatives on the Principal's Advisory Committee and as elected officers in each of the middle school classes. As a school dedicated to the Christian values of community and service, we teach our students to discover and accept their responsibility to the greater community. Students participate in projects and programs, such as weekly chapel offerings, to benefit our neighbors locally and world-wide who are in need and teach students the importance of moral and civic responsibility. Presentation and performance
Students can gain confidence and valuable skills by participating in presentations and performances. The annual Science Fair, Oratorical Affair Speech Meet and Spelling Bee events teach young learners valuable lessons in preparation and presentation. First Lutheran students hone their performance skills in a Christmas or Spring musical, and also through weekly chapel presentations. In addition, each grade level sings for the First Lutheran Church congregation at one Sunday service per school year. Student and school family support First Lutheran offers a breadth of programs to support the student learning experience, including an on-campus library and librarian, a daily lunch program provided by Allegre Foods, the online grading program Gradelink and a dedicated Health Office staffed with health care professionals. Additional support for our school families is available through the FLASH daycare program providing care for students before and after school, our summer day camp and our on-campus Early Education Center providing care to young children from six weeks to four years old. Our school families and students also benefit from the many resources available through our connection to First Lutheran Church, such as church services, Vacation Bible School, First Communion, pastoral counseling and community service opportunities. |
