Devotions
![]() Many people participate in the Christian discipline called devotions. But what are devotions? Generally speaking, devotions are faith practices, which are regularly applied in ones life. Someone might devote themselves to scripture reading, fasting, and/or prayer, to name a few devotional preactices. More often when people talk about devotions, they mean a combination of scripture reading, meditating (reflecting) on God's Word, and prayer. Many devotional resources have Bible readings assigned for each day. These readings may follow the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL). Following a daily lectionary, like the RCL, helps us hear the Word of God for our lives. Through a lectionary, the living voice of God interprets and confronts readers of scripture with the truth of who we are, and does not allow readers to frequent only the familiar and favorite passages of scripture. First Lutheran Church and School offers a variety resources for daily devotional use. Taking Faith Home - is a devotional resource created by Vibrant Faith Ministries. This resource is intended to be used by families, however many individuals find it helpful as they develop a disciple of scripture reading, reflection, and prayer. Taking Faith Home follows the RCL and is printed each week in the worship bulletin, but it may also be downloaded in PDF from our website.Christ in our Home - is a devotional resource produced quarterly by Augburg Fortress. This resource can be found in the entryway of the worship space or in the church office. Christ in Our Home, follows the RCL, and offers guided reflections from pastors, teaching theologians, and laity. This devotional resource is printed in two editions, a pocket sized - which fits in a purse, glovebox, or office draw (not to be left there) or a large print edition for those who have trouble with fine print. ELCA Global Missions - Epiphany Devotional - if you are new to devotional practices, you might consider beginning with a weekly devotion, rather than a daily devotion. The ELCA Global Mission Team has created a weekly devotional for the Season of Epiphany. This series follows the RCL for Sunday worship and has reflections and prayers from ELCA missionaries around the world. |
