Japanese Ministry

Japanese language ministry has been part of First Lutheran Church and School for a number of years, in cooperation with the Japan Evangelical Lutheran Church (JELC). Pastor Yutaka Yamamoto started the ministry with the help and encouragement of the then Senior Pastor Dean Nelson. Pastor Yamamoto and his wife, Fumie, started the ministry with just one member. During their years, they made a number of contributions to the FLCS community, including the courtyard Japanese Garden and "Festival Japan" celebrations.

Pastor Fumio Itoh and his wife Yasuko continued and expanded FLCS Japanese from 2005-2009. In addition his duties at FLCS, Pastor Itoh served our sister congregation, Lutheran Church of the Resurrection Japanese Ministry in Huntington Beach. With the help of both churches' senior pastors, two synods, two Bishops, and national ELCA and JELC, he laid the foundations of tomorrow for the native Japanese language ministry in the USA.
