ABOUT FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH AND SCHOOL
First Lutheran Church and School is a mission & ministry community in the greater Los Angeles area, in continuous service since its founding in 1926. We are a mission and ministry partner of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), a church body with more than 10,000 churches, 1,500 weekday schools and early education centers, and 4.7 million members.
FLCS ranks among the most culturally diverse congregations of its size in the ELCA, a growing and
truly international ministry of congregation and schools in Christ Jesus. More than 70 distinct national and tribal backgrounds are represented in this community, from every continent on the planet.
Together with our social service partner, FirstServe Community Services of the South Bay, Inc., we offer a wealth of caring human service programs to inspire people and transform lives. Our goal is to offer assistance and care to people at every age and stage of life, in obedience to the servant Christ.
We welcome you to visit and worship, and to become a partner in this caring community of Christian faith for all people. The 500 seat sanctuary, dedicated in 2001, plays host to more than 750 people of all ages and backgrounds each week. In addition to worship, we offer learning, serving, support and fun activities for all ages. What are Lutherans?
The Lutheran Church has its roots in the Reformation of the 16th Century, when German professor and pastor Martin Luther sought to restore basic biblical teaching to the medieval church. Today’s Lutheran Church numbers over 63 million people on every continent. Lutherans are leaders in the search for ecumenical unity, seeking fellowship with all other Christian bodies, and striving to practice radical welcome in the service of the Gospel of God’s amazing grace. In obedience to the Gospel of Christ, we welcome all people to full participation in worship, learning, community and service. We are eager to experience and share the Good News of God's love in Christ Jesus.
